Don's research interest is in using satellite instruments to determine aerosol and cloud properties and trace gas concentrations in the Earth's atmosphere.

He is a consultant to the SPICE project (Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering), one of whose aims is to identify an ideal particle for stratospheric based solar radiation management.  Don's contribution to the project is to carry out fundamental calculations on the reflection of solar radiation by aerosols in the atmosphere.
