Lecture Series: Clive Hamilton - Geoengineering Science, Politics and Ethics

Tuesday 1st May to Thursday 7th June 2012

With the failure of international negotiations, global greenhouse gas emissions are now on a trajectory that is worse than the worst-case scenario. As a result, climate scientists are beginning to contemplate a response to climate change that has previously been taboo, geoengineering—the intentional, enduring, large-scale manipulation of the Earth’s climate system. This series of six lectures will cover the broad range of issues raised by the emergence of climate engineering as a response to climate change.

Announcement: Call for Applications for Geoengineering Summer School Released

Thursday 26th April to Friday 1st June 2012

Research into proposed geoengineering techniques and the ethical and governance issues associated with them is gaining attention in academia and beyond. This summer school will provide early career researchers with information on the current state of developments in the field and will focus on communicating research to the public and to policy-makers. This will be the third annual transdisciplinary summer school. Previously the school has been hosted in Heidelberg, Germany, and Banff, Canada.

Announcement: Oxford to Lead £1.3m Research Project on Geoengineering Governance

Oxford is to lead a £1.3m research project on Climate Geoengineering Governance funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The work will be led from the Institute for Science, Innovation and Society, (InSIS), University of Oxford, and will also involve the Institute for Science and Ethics at Oxford together with Science and Technology Policy Research (SPRU) at the University of Sussex and the Faculty of Laws at University College London (UCL). The project’s PI is Professor Steve Rayner (steve.rayner@insis.ox.ac.uk) and its coordinator Peter Healey (peter.healey@insis.ox.ac.uk) , from whom further information can be obtained.

Conference: Planet Under Pressure 2012

Monday 26th to Thursday 29th March 2012

Representatives of the Oxford Geoengineering Programme will be leading two sessions on geoengineering at the conference. Professor Richard Darton, Professor Steve Rayner, Dr. Phil Renforth and Tim Kruger will lead sessions entitled 'Geoengineering Governance', which explores the Oxford Principals as a basis for governing geoengineering research; and 'Engineering Constraints' which focusses on technical aspects of proposed geoengineering techniques.
